Situated on the eastern side of the Greek island of Crete, Aghios Ioannis is composed of four small villages – Koutsounari, Ferma, Agia Fotia and Aghios Ioannis.
The area is spectacularly beautiful, featuring sapphire blue waters backed by lush green hills. Mass tourism has overlooked this part of Crete, so for those seeking an authentically Greek experience, holidays in Aghios Ioannis are the answer. Crete is less than four hours from London, with regular flights to Heraklion and Chania departing daily.
Although the villages are small, there are some good hotels and apartments, and in the larger town of Lefkas there is everything one expects of a popular cosmopolitan town, with plenty of shops, bars and a large marina.
Olive groves and ancient windmills figure largely in this region. The steady winds that have blown across this part of the coast have made some spectacular dunes at the western end of the long sandy beaches. Due to the wind the sport of kite surfing is becoming popular amongst locals and holidaymakers. The resort’s beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status.
The clear sea also makes Aghios Ioannis a great location for water sports, so for those who like something more than sunbathing, there is plenty of excitement to be found on holidays in Aghios Ioannis.
Away from the beach and the water sports, this unspoilt area is worth exploring by hire car or bicycle.
The Kapsa Monastery, or the Monastery of Aghios Ioannis Kapsa to give it its full name, is on the road to Goudouras, carved into the hillside in a gorge and overlooking the sea. It is well worth a visit, but dress rules here are strict, so leave the beach wear back at your hotel.
As well as some fantastic scenery on the way, the monastery itself has a very interesting history. Built in the15th century it was destroyed by the Turks a few years later, restored in the 19th century and was a refuge for Greek and British resistance forces during the German Occupation of Crete in WWII.
Boat hire is also possible on holidays to Aghios Ioannis and, providing you choose a calm day, the coves and bays around this part of the coast are well worth investigating.
Holidays in Aghios Ioannis are ideal for couples who want a lazy beach holiday, or groups of friends who love water sports. Low cost and reliable, easyJet holidays are a good option as savings can be made by booking your hotel and flight together, making cheap holidays to Agios Ioannis even more cost effective.
