Activities galore on the Island of Corfu

  • For first time visitors to Corfu there are some captivating historic sites to be enjoyed.
  • The island’s capital, Kerkyra, is an interesting mix of Venetian, French and Greek architecture. Visit the 16th Century fort, especially worthwhile on summer nights to see the music and light displays.
  • Wander the town’s streets and perhaps treat someone special to a piece of gold jewellery, (for which Corfu is renowned) and make sure you visit the Church of St Spiridon with its mummified saint!
  • An absolute must for the itinerary is Paleokastritas: 6 interlinked beaches, backed by olive and lemon groves and the site of the Moni Theotokou Monastery. With its tranquil blue seas, perfect for diving, it is arguably the most beautiful spot on the island.
  • Elsewhere, take in the Achillion Palace, once owned by Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany.
  • Venture further inland and ascend to Strinilas and Mount Pantokrator, a picturesque place to walk amongst the orchids in early summer. For serious hikers, investigate the Corfu Trail, which runs north to south across the island.

Beaches and Activities

Corfu is famed for its beaches and visitors are sure to find their own perfect enclave.

  • For a quiet paradise, head east to Avlaki or Agios Spiridon, with its breathtaking view over the hills of Albania.
  • Families will enjoy the sandy expanse of Agios Stephanos in the northwest and the Canal d’Amour near Sidari is a great place for swimming. For those to whom sunbathing is anthemia, there are plenty of activities to try. Speed around the bays by jet ski, hire a pedalo, kayak the waves or book a diving introduction.
  • Experience Corfu from the sea on a sailing excursion, visit the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos, sail into deserted coves for a BBQ, or treat your children with a dolphin-spotting trip.
  • For something really different, (and terrifying), try parapenting at Agios Gordis. This is basically a cross between parachuting and paragliding –where, with a parachute strapped to your back, you run off the side of a mountain and then soar through the sky on the warm air currents! There are also good opportunities for horse riding, quad safaris and golf -on the excellent course in the Ropa Valley.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Corfu is an island that likes to party and there are many paniyiris (festivals) throughout the year.

  • Particularly notable is Varkarola in August; this takes place in Paleokastritas with a parade of boats, serenading locals and dancers on floating piers, all culminating in a majestic firework display.
  • For a big night out, check out the resorts of Kavos, Ypsos, Sidari, Gavia and Dassia. Here you will find bars and clubs aplenty, (the Edem Club in Dassia has been very popular with recent visitors.) Local drinks worth sampling are kumquat liqueur, Metaxas brandy and the retsina wine with its aroma of pine forests. Clubs and bars will reliably offer interesting alcoholic concoctions served in ‘fishbowls’ to share with your friends!
  • For those who prefer to steer clear of the hard-stuff, coffee bars stay open until the early hours, the Bristol Café in Kerkyra is a good place to join the locals and watch the world pass by.
  • Don’t forget to try the delicious Greek food during your stay. A good idea is to order mezzedakia to share, allowing you to try a range of specialities such as Tiropitakia (feta pies), Taramosalata (cod roe dip), Dolmades, (stuffed vine leaves) and, of course, Hummus, which tastes completely different in its native country.
