One of the island’s most ancient destinations, Pyla is believed to have been in existence since 1650 BC, with recent archaeological findings in the area dating back to that time.
Home to both its original settlers, Greek and Turkish Cypriots, Pyla is a unique destination with a distinctive cultural background, as it sits within the United Nations Buffer Zone. For this reason it has three churches and a mosque, and so visitors will experience two different cultures during their stay here.
At the heart of Pyla sits the village square, where you will find the friendly locals and a scattering of tavernas. You will find some authentic local food on the menus across the village, with some English and international dishes offered also.
Those looking for some entertainment in the evenings will find it across the village’s bars and restaurants, with Greek themed nights, karaoke contests, quiz nights, live music acts and dancing all hosted throughout the week and at weekends.
Just outside the village sits the sweeping Dasaki Pyla Beach, which is a rugged stretch of coastline boarded by a pretty landscape of leafy trees. Here you can find some peace on the sands, with loungers and parasols available for hire, and an array of hotels with beach bars and restaurants. This beach is ideal for families, as its shallow, crystal clear waters provide the perfect place to paddle.
Many opt for a holiday in Pyla to enjoy its peaceful, local atmosphere. Take a look at the sleepy destination of Kalavasos, another ancient Cypriot village.
Pyla’s beach area is the most tourist led section of the village, but if you want to head for busier shores then you can make the short journey to Larnaca, which is filled with cultural attractions, local souks and a beautiful bay.
