What to do in Split
Split is the bustling hub of the Adriatic, and there are plenty of places to visit. There are many opportunities for shopping, including a large farmer’s market and another one for arts and crafts. If you are interested in history, you will find not just Roman buildings in mint condition but also Renaissance wood carvings and Egyptian sphinxes imported by the Roman emperor, Diocletan. At night the city is alive with restaurants, bars and open-air discos as well as an open-air cinema in summer.
In the summer months, Split is almost constantly bathed in sunlight, and as it is quite a compact city it is very possible to go from a morning’s shopping and sightseeing to the beach in no time. While you’re there you can get a drink and an ice-cream, or if you feel like some exercise you could take part in some ‘picigin’, a traditional beach game involving a small rubber ball. If you find the main beach overcrowded, there are some more secluded spots on the other side of Marjan hill. Split holidays are perfect for beach breaks, look out for deals with easyJet holidays.
Marjan Hill itself is a place well worth visiting. Winding paths snake up the side of the hill past lookout points and old chapels, and when you reach the summit you are rewarding with a breathtaking view of the city. For the traveller who wants to see more of Croatia, there are day-trips to the islands off the coast available by boat, where more beaches and beautiful landscapes await.
