Bruges City Breaks

Often called ‘The Venice of the North’, Bruges is a wonderful destination for a city break that has romantic canals to explore, cobbled medieval streets to wander, fascinating classical and modern art to admire and a unique culture to experience. Whether you are looking for a relaxing city break to unwind from the rat race or are looking for an enthralling cultural experience in a European city, then a city break to Bruges will have something for you.

Bruges, a postcard perfect city

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bruges (named Brugge in Flemish) is a picturesque city of tall spires, cobbled streets, placid canals with their quaint pedestrian bridges and pretty whitewashed almshouses. The compact size of the city allows for easy access on foot, and there are plenty of places to rent a bike, a wonderful way to explore the city and keep fit at the same time. But possibly the best way to see Bruges is on a boat tour, cruising around the canals that wind their way through the city.

The Grote Markt, a market square located in the heart of the city, is where you find loads of busy restaurants, serving traditional dishes such as Flemish beef stew and Belgian waffles, and many lively bars where you can party to the small hours of the morning. Whilst there, you can also climb 366 steps to the top of a huge 13th century belfry that has panoramic views of the city and where the ancient bells still ring to this day.

Also nearby is the Basilica of the Holy Blood, a beautiful Gothic style church that houses a phial said to contain a cloth with blood of Jesus Christ. For a touch culture there are plenty of museums and art galleries, all within easy walking distance around the city, such as a diamond museum, a chocolate museum and a lace making museum, dedicated to one of Bruges' best-known industry, but is the Groeninge Museum that should not be missed. It houses masterpieces that date as far back as the 15th century as well and many paintings produced by artists that lived and worked in Bruges.
