Take a trip back in time to the golden age of British life and living at Beamish, the North England Open Air Museum. The museum is a treasure trove of late Victorian and Edwardian buildings, working machines and artefacts. (info at www.beamish.org.uk).


Just a half hour metro ride from the city lies the picturesque coastal town of South Shields, boasting a lively market, fairground, play parks and a new family-friendly attraction The Word, National Centre for the Written Word (www.theworduk.org). The centre is currently hosting an exhibition celebrating the work of film director, and Shields lad, Sir Ridley Scott.

The picturesque coastal town of Cullercoats is just a half-hour train ride from the centre of Newcastle. Enclosed by small piers, the south of the bay is a launching area for local fishing boats and features working Victorian lifeboat station and fisherman's watch house. All of which feature in the work of the American artist Winslow Homer.
