Cheap Restaurants

Cal's Own
Like the punny name above the door (Cal's Own, Calzone, geddit?) this pizza palace is cheap, cheerful and full of charm, from the decor which includes a reclaimed school sports hall flooring to the homely Italian food(we're loving the Taleggio-stuffed dates by the way). It's all easy on the eye and pocket.

Address: 1-2 Holly Avenue, West Jesmond | Telephone: 0191 281 5522 |

Affordable Restaurants

Starks Kitchen
Stark by name and in looks, all bright white walls and minimalist design, but the food is colourful and imaginative. This off the beaten track eaterie, offers small, but perfectly formed menus with dishes changing depending on what's in season and demand. Always in demand however is the rib-eye steak.

Address: 205-207 Chillingham Rd | Telephone: 0191 265 8436 |

St Mary's Inn
Real ales and hearty Northumberland grub against a warming backdrop of roaring wood-burning stoves make the newly developed St Mary's Inn a sight for sore eyes. With 11 stylish rooms on the upper floors, it's perfect for an overnight stay, too.

Address: St Mary's Lane, St Mary's Park, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE61 6BL | Telephone: 01670 293 293 |

Good Quality Restaurants

Dobson and Parnell
Named after the famous architects who designed this Victorian building, the awesome interior is matched by equally refined dining. What better way to get a taste of those sophisticated days of old than dining on smoked wild duck breast for starter with turbot cooked on the bone for mains within in the elegant high-ceilinged restaurant oozing old-school, understated glamour.

Address: 21 Queen Street | Telephone: 0191 2210904 |

Fine Dining Restaurants

Seaham Hall Hotel
Having undergone a £2m revamp, the hotel's restaurant now has a trendy London vibe, while still boasting the best in fine dining. The new look befits the impressive building, famous for being the venue where poet Lord Byron married (albeit briefly) Anne Isabella Milbanke.

Address: Lord Byron's Walk, Seaham, County Durham, SR7 7AG | Telephone: 0191 516 1400 |
