The start of the new year welcomes an exciting programme of shows at The Bristol Hippodrome including rock 'n' roll musical The Rocky Horror Show from 14-19 January and a favourite from the West End - Oliver! - from 22 January (atgtickets.com).

A magical carpet ride will take audiences at the Bristol Hippodrome to the colours and sounds of the Far East this Christmas in the fun-packed family pantomime Aladdin. Featuring genies by the lamp-load, side-splitting comedy, a selection of chart-topping songs and bags of family fun, the theatre promises to bring its biggest, best and funniest pantomime ever to the stage from 7 December.

The world-renowned Wildlife Photographer of the Year touring exhibition from the Natural History Museum returns to Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and will be on display throughout January. The stunning, thought-provoking images reveal rarely seen wonders of the natural world. Admission is free with £2 donations recommended (Queen's Road, tel:0117 922 3571).

Just north of Bristol is the Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in Gloucestershire which is hosting its 2013 Festival of Birds on 26 and 27 January. There will be a range of conservation talks from experts, a range of workshops, great gifts for wildlife lovers and plenty of activities, arts and crafts for all the family (wwt.org.uk/visit/slimbridge).

Just 25 minutes from Bristol is the stunning Enchanted Christmas at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum. Featuring a spectacular illuminated trail, crafts, gifts and festive family fun, the evening event near Tetbury will run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 23 December, 5pm-8.30pm, with the last entry to the trail at 7.15pm.
