Guns and Roses perform "Not in this Lifetime" on May 30th in Bilbao's spectacular new football stadium at San Mamés. Tickets range from €60 to €160 but for fans this is a unique opportunity. http://www.gnrbilbao.com

The Three Kings Procession through the streets of the city centre on 5th January. It starts at 6 pm and goes all around Bilbao, ending at the Town Hall where the kings appear to give the crowd a special message. Sweets, dancing, music and a spectacular light and sound display.

to one of Spain's most exciting fiestas. Bilbao's Semana Grande is a 9-day party with an extensive cultural program offering entertainment and fun for all ages and all tastes. The official opening is on 19th August and it ends on 27th. Street theatre, music, food and drink stall, art and craft, children's shows and spectacular fireworks. Stay away if you don't like crowds.

to the January Sales in the Old Quarters of the city. You'll find all kinds of high street shops, side-by-side with local artisan and speciality shops. Prices are slashed for most of January and February.

Day Trips

...to one of the beach towns or villages a short metro ride from the city. Plentzia is a good choice with its long beach, small fishing port, green surroundings and plaza. Plenty of bars for refreshments and several good restaurants serving set lunchtime meals at reasonable prices.

Most people don't realise that Vitoria-Gasteiz is the capital of the Basque Country. Just an hour by bus from Bilbao, the city is well worth a visit for its historic buildings, including two cathedrals, the spectacular Artium contemporary art museum and of course, its restaurants and pintxo bars in the Old Quarters.
