Top tips for your next trip to the Netherlands!

The Netherlands is so easily accessible; it takes just under an hour from most airports in the UK to reach Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Whether you are travelling to discover foodie hotspots, dynamic design, historic gems or to relax with friends, most major Dutch cities and regions are just a short train ride away from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, so why not make the most of your break to the Netherlands and explore some more?

Dynamic design

Check out Eindhoven’s post-industrial buildings for house design collectives, pop-up shops and to-die-for homeware stores. Or, visit the Philips Museum or Dutch Design Week (held annually every October).

Rotterdam is hard to beat for all things hip and cool when it comes to architecture, design shopping or street art.  Our top tip is head to Witte de Withstraat.

Foodies paradise

Ever wanted to eat in an old water tower? Then head to Water Toren WT in Utrecht.  Fancy having a meal in a former power station, then Radio Royaal, Eindhoven is for you. Want to eat the freshest seafood?  Then try the harbour clubs at Scheveningen (The Hague).

The Hague is also famous for its many Indonesian specialty restaurants offering satay rich treats, sambals and rice tafels (tables).

Historic gems

Did you know that there are around 700 ‘Instagram-worthy’ castles and country estates waiting to be discovered?  Get that perfect pic in the plush surroundings of Ruurlo Castle, or stroll around the Netherlands’ largest castle, De Haar, with its beautiful moated grounds.  And, can you uncover the story about the imprisoned scholar who escaped from Loevestein Castle in the most spectacular way?  Find out the truths from behind the castle walls on your next trip to the Netherlands!

Enjoy the spectacular tulips, but be kind

Tulips are in full bloom from March to May and nothing quite prepares you for the bold fields of colour and picture-pretty flower stalls and markets.  ‘Photo opportunities galore’ are to be had in Flevoland and North Holland.  Just take care to stick to authorised pathways through the tulip fields.  These long-stemmed beauties are quite delicate and they need our TLC and respect to preserve them through the season.

Master your Dutch painters

For a one to one with an internationally famous masterpiece, head to the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis in The Hague. Here you can get inches away from Girl with a Pearl Earring, or marvel at the many Rembrandt paintings that line the gallery walls.

Top Van Gogh tips: if you want to see some lesser known Van Gogh creations, then head to the Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch.  Or, visit the Kroller Muller Museum in Gelderland and see the 2nd largest Van Gogh collection in the world!
