Hidden in a tiny piazza, the startling Scala Contarini tower, reminiscent of the leaning tower of Pisa, houses a decorative spiral staircase built in the 15th century as a display of prestige and social standing. Ca' Pesaro has an exceptional collection of 19th-20th century art with works by such artists as Chagall, Klimt, Paul Klee and Kandinsky. This month they're joined by a major exhibition of paintings by American Impressionist William Merritt Chase (until 28 May 2017). capesaro.visitmuve.it/en/home

The 'Murano Oggi. Emozioni di Vetro' exhibition at the glass museum focuses on the island's present-day glass artists with a selection of their most striking works. The museum also provides a fascinating insight into the history of the tradition. (8 Fondamenta Giustinina, Murano; until 25 April).

Take the vaporetto to pretty Burano and continue to reach quiet and historic Torcello. The island's past importance is evident in its monuments, particularly the stunning cathedral which contains some beautiful Byzantine mosaics.
