La Buttiga Beer Room
Set on a street corner in the colourful chinatown area, this hip beer emporium with pavement tables features craft brews from the company's microbrewery in Piacenza, great music and friendly people. Unlike many Milan bars it closes for just a couple of days in August, around the middle of the month.

Le Biciclette
This ex-bicycle shop set in a side street on the fringe of the historic centre is decked out with funky furniture and features art displays by leading international figures. Open until late, it's a great place to relax and also has live music and DJs.

Caffè Martesana
Atmospheric even in the autumn, this is a popular cocktail venue set on one of the city's surviving canals with a few outside tables set on a terrace and an eclectic range of drinks. The murmur of a waterfall adds to the ambience.

Weekend nights are best at this long established alternative disco-cocktail bar on the north side of the city (metro: Turro). Funky décor and a vast range of drinks and shots pack in a crowd of twenty- and thirty-somethings.

Recently relocated to another reassuringly bleak setting on Milan's urban fringe, Plastic/House of Bordello is one of the city's longest established and most idiosyncratic clubs.
