  Cave-like mezedopolío where Pinilopi serves island fava (split yellow peas) topped with caper sprigs, tender keftédes (meatballs) and similar. The most covetable tables are outside, literally under the church belfry.

Meze Meze
Hidden taverna whose outside tables have great views north to other islands. The menu is somewhat limited: purée of white aubergines, grilled oyster mushrooms, pasta and risotti, grilled meat, some seafood. No dessert list, but probably a sweet treat on the house.

Melitini Oia
 Despite a rather unglamourous location on the through road, Melitini is always full thanks to keen prices and unusual dishes like lamb sausages or turnovers stuffed with pastourmás (Armenian style cured beef), plus more typical platters, all in big portions. Drinks are fairly priced and roof terrace seating coveted.

Giorgaros
Go here for some of the cheapest, freshest fish around:  bállos (large-eyed dentex), crispy, small shrimp, or sargós (white bream). There's little else offered besides salads and fried mezédes. But the amazing view north to yachts under sail, the caldera rim villages and various islets compensates.

Cava Alta
The Spanish name of this trendy spot reflects the background of the owner, who ensures that Mediterranean flavours blend with Greek ones. Choose  starters like mushrooms with pata negra ham or smoked sausage. Mains might be oxtail with capered fáva purée or Cretan apáki (smoked loin). Book a rooftop table overlooking the village and the Crete-bound ferries.
