28 October is a national holiday for Ohi Day, marking the anniversary of the day in 1940 when Greece's General Metaxas said "No" ("Ohi") to Mussolini's Italian troops entering Greek territory. Watch the military and student parades through Chania town at midday.

Take a hike down the famous 16km-long Samaria gorge in south-west Crete, where you'll be treated to some amazing scenery, flora and fauna. The gorge is closed in winter and partly opens from the bottom end in April, fully opening at the beginning of May.
