Athens Sightseeing

As a way of celebrating its 150th anniversary, the National Archaeological Museum has a special exhibition called Odysseys (October 3-31), which chronicles the journey of Man from ancient to modern times.

The wonderful Athens & Epidaurus Festival showcases a high quality array of drama, dance and musical performances in some astonishingly beautiful venues, such as Herodes Atticus Theatre beneath the Acropolis. Check out www.greekfestival.gr.

The pre-lantern festival known as Apokries culminates on the weekend of February 25-26th, with plenty of dressing up and all sorts of merriment and frivolity on the streets of Athens, especially in the touristy Plaka area.

Key Areas

Stroll down Athinas Street from Omonia Square and visit Athens' most photogenic markets. The buzzing meat and fish markets sit on the opposite side of the road to the colourful flower and veg stalls.

Day Trips

A great way to escape the Athens traffic is to make a quick getaway on a hydrofoil for the day or preferably overnight to the picturesque island of Hydra, which allows no vehicles on it at all.

If you fancy escaping the high summer city heat, then the surrounding mountains (especially Parnitha) offer a network of surprisingly rustic walking paths, as well as great views.

The tiny island of Agistri, which sits opposite Aegina, is a great place to escape to for a swim or wander through it's wooded interior, as the spring days grow warmer.

Winter is a good time to take a bus down to the end of the Attic Peninsula and visit the wonderful temple of Poseidon at Sounion, without having many other people around at all.
