From Oct 18 to Jan 8 see Ralph Gibson's Black Trilogy, a series of fine art photographs accompanied by the documents and works which inspired the creation of these iconic images. Info from the tourist office.


Discover "Art as an Experience" through the works of Francis Bacon and Bruce Nauman at the fabulous Musée Fabre in the centre of town during July. For more information visit http://museefabre.montpellier3m.fr.


The Festival des Architectures Vives (13-18th June 2017) is a great chance to see pop-up contemporary architecture and also explore buildings in Montpellier which are normally closed to the public. All details from the tourist office.


The 42km Montpellier Marathon races on 10th March leave and arrive back at the Place de la Comedie. There will be music, street food and entertainers all the way along the route, as well as a relay race and a mini-marathon for kids. More info from the Tourist Office.

Key Areas


The Fabre Museum is outstanding, with works by Rubens, Breugel, and Monet. On the 1st Sunday of every month, at 3pm and 4pm they run free guided tours highlighting their most recent acquisitions. For more information visit museefabre.montpellier3m.fr . Closed Mondays.

Day Trips


Take a daytrip to Arles (1 hour by train) and discover all things Van Gogh; see the house he stayed in (the yellow one next to the Roman Amphitheatre, visit the Vincent Van Gogh foundation museum, and the Hotel Dieu where Van Gogh was treated when it was a hospital. Escape the heat with a day trip to the Pic Saint Loup vineyards where you can meet the winemakers, enjoy a tasting, and end the day with a convivial meal, drinks included. The easiest way to organise is via a company like www.instant-terroir.com but you can do it independently too.


Various companies offer day trips to the Pic St-Loup from Montpellier but you can just drive out to the village of Cazevieille, park and hike up to the cross and shrine at the top. Up and back takes about 3 hours but the views are worth it. All info from the tourist office.
