Lyon Sightseeing


The Fête des Lumières is a gigantic street party as well as a fabulous light display. All kinds of images are projected onto the walls, and the crowds wander from sight to sight, drinking mulled wine as they go. 7-10 December, www.fetedeslumieres.lyon.fr/en

From 20th June to 1st September the Tout l'Monde Dehors (Everyone Outside) festival runs free daily events across the city including music, dances, circus workshops, cinema screenings, treasure hunts, and sports. www.lyon.fr/page/tlmd.html

Watch 350 hardy souls swim 8kms upstream along the Rhone as it traverses Lyon on 15th January. The "Traversée de Lyon à la nage" starts at 10am and you can watch from any of the river banks or bridges. See traverseelyon.nap.free.fr .

Key Areas

The Centre d'Histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation shows the role Lyon played during the mass deportation of Jews from France during WWII. Well worth a visit. www.chrd.lyon.fr

Cycle along the beautifully redeveloped riverbanks to Lyon's Olympic Park and take a backstage tour of one of France's most famous football stadiums. www.parc-ol.com/visite-stade

Mini World Lyon only opened last year but has already become a favourite with adults and kids alike. Spot the celebrities, the film references, the jokes and once an hour see the fabulous Fête des Lumières recreated in miniature. Until 18 June, https://miniworldlyon.com/en

The Henri Matisse exhibition at the Beaux-Arts museum runs until 6th March (closed Tuesdays) with 250 of his drawings on display tracing his artistic development throughout his career. More info from www.mba-lyon.fr .

Day Trips

About an hour south of Lyon by car is the Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval, a fantastical dream palace sculpted by a postman using the rocked collected every day during his delivery rounds. Inspiring, beautiful and fun, it's well worth the drive. www.facteurcheval.com
