La Rochelle Sightseeing

The International Film Festival of La Rochelle from 30th June to 9th July features retrospectives of the seminal work of Andrei Tarkovsky and Alfred Hitchcock including premieres and 3 children's screenings daily. www.festival-larochelle.org

Saturday 13th May is reserved for the "Sarabande des filles", an all girls race around the town, either following the 5km or the 10km route. Many participants dress up, and the atmosphere is very much a party celebration. http://www.sarabandefillesdelarochelle.fr/sarabande/

Key Areas

The Le Phare des Baleines lighthouse, on the very western tip of the Ile de Re, is still working today but is also open to the public. Climb the 255 circular stairs to enjoy the fabulous view from the top.

The entrance to "Le Bunker" is through a small door just off the marketplace. Underground you enter the bunker which contains a quirky and fascinating museum about La Rochelle during WWII. Ask for the information folder in English. http://bunkerlarochelle9.wixsite.com/lebunkerdelarochelle
