Sightseeing

From Oct 21 to Nov 6 take a free guided tour of the fully-functioning Brest Naval Base, Mon-Fri 1-3.30pm. Tours are led by young naval trainees who explain the history of, and current activities at the base and if you're lucky show you round a vessel. ID required, visitesorganisées@premar-atlantique.gouv.fr

The Festival Primavera del Tango over the Easter weekend (14-17 April) is a great opportunity to get your dancing shoes on and join a lesson, or watch demonstrations on how it really should be done. www.brest.fr

The DansFabrik festival of modern and contemporary dance runs from 27th February to 5th March and this year highlights dance from Chile. There will be dance sessions and classes for everyone at all levels.

Key Areas

Enjoy a 360° view of the city from France's first urban cable car and visit the Plateau des Capucins, now a smart modern, eco-friendly cultural hub with restaurants, art studios, exhibition spaces, and a library. (www.capucinsbrest.com)

The Musée Mémorial at Fort Montbarey tells the story of Brest's role in WWII, the occupation of the fort by the Nazis and the fate of Brest's inhabitants. Sombre but fascinating, it explains much about Brest today.

Day Trips

Take a 1 hour 30 minute ferry ride to the magical l'île-de-Sein, which has no cars or even bicycles. Take a picnic and don't miss the Musée du Sauvetage (sea rescue museum). More info from pennarbed.fr

Take a sunset cruise aboard Brest's favorite tall ship, La Recouvrance. Try your hand as a sailor, or just enjoy a drink on the bridge. The ships's 25th birthday party 14-16 July includes seven tall ships sailing out as a flotilla. (www.larecouvrance.com)

Buy tickets for a 1-2 day cruise on La Recouvrance, the famous tall ship, and see if you're lucky you can help sail it. Excursions are very popular, so book ahead. If you can't get tickets, you can at least go and see her when she's in port. See their full timetable and prices on www.larecouvrance.com
