Cheap flights to Dortmund

Dortmund
If you’re looking for a long or short break to Dortmund, then book a cheap flight with easyJet. Dortmund, Germany’s sixth largest city, has developed into a modern metropolis in recent years, featuring numerous cultural highlights. The Ruhr area’s new "crowd-puller" stands for science and insurance companies, for education, information technology and culture. Yet despite its development potential, the city with its population of 600,000 has remained faithful to its origins. Dortmund is a city with many possibilities.

Dortmund is a shopper’s paradise, with a highly attractive range of stores. After Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt, the Westphalian city is Germany’s most successful shopping attraction, with a catchment area of 80 to 100 kilometres, covering large sections of the Sauerland and Münsterland regions. Dortmund also appeals to shoppers from as far away as Holland, for obvious reasons: Dortmund’s many stores cater for (almost) every taste and budget. Most of them are located in a compact, easy-to-reach area.

Dortmund has an impressive cultural reputation, featuring theatres, museums, and galleries, and the local cabaret scene has long made a name for itself in the city's wider area. The city boasts a wide variety of museums: 20th century art is shown at the Museum am Ostwall, extensive and priceless collections of coins, glassware, porcelain, furniture and paintings can be seen at the Museum of Art and Cultural History. The technological and social development of the region is documented at the Westphalian Industrial Museum and the German Industrial Health and Safety Exhibition, and fossil treasures are displayed at the Museum of Natural History. Architectural highlights in the city centre are the Reinoldi and Petri Churches, built in the 13th and 14th century.

Dortmund has everything to turn a city trip into an exciting experience: in the Fletch Bizzel district, theatres, clubs, restaurants and art galleries have transformed the former industrial landscape, and the Konzerthaus – Westphalia’s philharmonic hall, opened in September 2002 – makes Dortmund a music city of national importance. Then of course there’s the stage: Dortmund’s highly renowned theatres cover the genres of music theatre, ballet, drama, children’s and youth theatre, as well as philharmonic concerts at the Konzerthaus Dortmund.

Hohensyburg Casino, one of the most modern and successful casinos in Europe, is all about gambling. The gambling machines in the Las Vegas World and on the gaming floor invite visitors to try their luck, and there are 35 tables for more traditional gambling pleasures like roulette, blackjack or baccarat. Should you prefer to see sports or show business celebrities close up, you are bound to strike lucky at one of the eight Westfalenhallen – one of Europe’s biggest and most modern sports, entertainment and exhibition centres with its flagship, Westfalenhalle 1, and an atmosphere that has impressed the promoters of around 30 world championships and over 50 European tournaments. Located practically next door, the Westfalen stadium seats 83,000 supporters and is Germany’s largest and most attractive first division arena, home of the 1997 Champions League winners and six times German champions, Borussia Dortmund. Naturally, Dortmund will be among the venues to host the Football World Championships in 2006.

If you favour a cosier atmosphere, simply drop in at one of the countless pubs; after all, Dortmunders are not only football experts but also dedicated upholders of the Westphalian beer tradition. Alternatively, tourists may relax in one of the town’s "green oases": extensive forests, meadows, fields and parks cover almost half of the city’s 280 square kilometres, the many green areas offering outstanding recreational and leisure facilities. The beautiful rose garden with its over 3000 different varieties is only one of the famous Westfalenpark’s attractions, and you will find entertaining ways to relax out of doors at the race track in Wambel or at Dortmund Zoo.

And if all that isn’t enough, there are many other interesting places to visit in the region – for example in the cities of Bochum (the Playhouse; the Zeiss Planetarium featuring sky simulator and time machine; the Mining Museum; and the musical, Starlight Express), Hagen (the Westphalian Open-Air Museum and Hohenlimburg castle), Hamm (the Maximilianpark and the Gustav-Lübcke-Museum), Münster (the All-Weather Zoo Münster; the Graphics Museum Pablo Picasso; the Museum of Natural History; the Westphalian Regional Museum), Soest (with its unique old town centre – a cross between the middle ages and modern times) and Unna (Europe’s only centre for international light design).
