Brussels Sightseeing

The annual Jazz Marathon, held this year on the 26-28 May, transforms the city into a jazz stage. There are free concerts in almost all the bars, while outdoor stages fill the city's main squares with music and dancing.

In March, Brussels goes architecture and design crazy as the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Festival puts the spotlight on the city's unique heritage. The festival runs from the 11th to the 26th March and will feature film screenings, exhibitions and guided tours. The highlight, though, will be the opportunity to peek into interiors that are not normally open to the public. http://www.explore.brussels/

Day Trips

Only 20 minutes by train from Brussels, Leuven is a beautiful and historic university town and Belgium's high-tech hub. See the old university library and the botanical garden, then have a drink on the bar-lined main square. Alternatively, rent a bike at the station and explore the surrounding countryside.

Liège, only an hour by train from the centre of Brussels, makes for a perfect day trip. Belgium's former capital of steel has been getting a polish in recent years and it shows. The rejuvenated city, sandwiched between hills and rivers, is awash with new bars, restaurants and shopping opportunities. The latest excuse to visit is the recently completed museum La Boverie, set in a beautiful park. It organises groundbreaking art exhibitions in cooperation with the Louvre in Paris.
