One of the world's greatest cities, there are over 2000 years' worth of sites and attractions in the Italian capital, Rome. Explore at leisure 1st century must-sees such as the Colosseum, to 18th century spectaculars like the Trevi fountain, wander around local areas such as Trastevere or head out to hill-top towns such as Frascati by bike or scooter.

No-one should visit Rome without seeing Saint Peter's Basilica, Piazza San Pietro (open daily). Quite simply the largest, most lavish church in the world; a Renaissance-Baroque extravaganza. Climb to the top of the dome for incredible views of the city.

Close by, the Vatican attracts thousands of people each day to see the beautiful paintings and architecture, the culmination of which must be the Sistine Chapel.

Wander round the Pantheon, Piazza della Rotonda (open daily). The best preserved ancient temple of them all, and an amazing engineering feat.

To get a sense of ancient Rome, walk through the Roman Forum, Largo Romolo e Remo 1 (open daily). While considerably reduced after 2000 years, it's still a most compelling sight.
