Beatlemania is still alive in Liverpool today and any fans of the Fab Four can take a trip down memory lane with a visit to the Beatles Story Museum; a night out in the Cavern on Matthew Street or even a magical mystery bus tour around well known Beatles' landmarks, including of course Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane.
Liverpool's Albert Dock is the largest collection of Grade 1 listed buildings in England. It was opened by Prince Albert over 150 years ago and symbolises Liverpool's 19th century greatness as a port of world importance. These days it houses a great mix of shops, cafes, lively bars, restuarants and museums, including the Tate Modern art gallery and the Merseyside Maritime Museum, and offers a great day out for all.
Alternatively, just a stone's throw from The Albert Dock is the Pier Head with its easily distinguishable landmark - the Royal Liver Buildings, topped with the legendary 'liver birds'. From the Pier Head you can catch a ferry 'cross the Mersey for a sightseeing cruise with terrific views of the city, regardless of the weather!
And if sightseeing tours with a difference are your thing, why not check out Liverpool's latest one. Liverpool Duck Tours offer a unique one hour amphibious sightseeing tour of the city's historic waterfront, centre and docks, transporting you in a specially converted original 1940's DUKW, so that you can combine travelling both through water and over land as required!...
Shopping in Liverpool is delightful because it is so compact and mostly traffic free. All the main high street names can be found around Church Street. But if you want something a little different, well worth a visit are The Bluecoat Chambers, which is a small art and craft complex; Cavern Walks and the Cavern Quarter for designer fashions; or for retro clothing, antiques and handcrafted goods, try the Quiggins Centre.
Finally, if it is sport you are after then you have come to the right city! Football is a huge passion of Liverpuddlians, and the home grounds of both Liverpool (Anfield) and Everton (Goodison Park)are just a few miles from the city centre. Matches take place at both grounds throughout the season, or alternatively why not visit on a non match day and enjoy a behind the scenes tour of the stadium. And when you've had enough of football, you could check out the horse racing at nearby Haydock Park or Aintree Racecourses, or enjoy a round or two at one of the seven championship golf courses on Merseyside, including two that are home to the famous British Open.
