The Channel Islands can be found just off the coast of France, right on the edge of the English Channel. They are made up of 5 islands: Jersey, Guernsey, Herm, Sark and Alderney. There are some smaller islands which are included in this group, but they aren’t generally open to visitors.
The local language is English; however, being only 8 miles from France, the islands were once a part of Normandy. Many of the place names and roads, as well as the food are still very much French.
For many businesses the islands are an offshore tax haven, which has created a successful financial industry. They are also known around the world for their locally grown flowers and for their prized purebred Guernsey cows.
