Rijeka is located on one of the sunniest coasts of the Mediterranean against a magnificent backdrop of the mountainous Primorsko-Goranska. The city grew around Rijeka Bay, a natural harbour, and has developed into Croatia’s biggest port. The rugged coastline with its many sheltered bays provides a beautiful backdrop for lazy days spent in the sun.
As a result of its location on the coast Rijeka has a lively aquatic sports scene. Sailing, diving, windsurfing, water polo, and sea fishing are just some of the activities offered. And only 30 kms away the mountains offer endless possibilities for hiking, mountaineering, hill walking, hunting, etc.

Located in the heart of the Dalmatia region, the old town centre is located within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace – a UNESCO heritage site - and is a warren of little cobbled streets oozing with charm and history. All of Split’s impressive history can be traced here, from Roman streets and palace gates, to medieval chapels and churches. Today the streets are lined with little boutiques, galleries, souvenir shops, and restaurants. Big shopping malls with all the big high street names can be found on the outskirts of the city.
Being a port-city, Split offers exceedingly good sea food restaurants, but be sure to also try some of the local specialities such as pršut (wind-dried and smoked ham), pašticada s njokima (Dalmatian stewed beef served with noodles), or salted sardines, all washed down with a good local wine.
