Discover Ireland – Activities: Afloat and Ashore

Rent a houseboat
Re-opened in 1994 after a major reconstruction project, the Waterway links the 215km stretch of navigable water on the vast River Shannon with the second great waterway on the island, the 84km-long Erne system. Aboard your cruiser or barge on the Shannon-Erne Waterway, you have a fantastic opportunity to see a countryside which few had seen in the 125 years that this tranquil stretch of water was abandoned for navigation.

Walk, golf or ride….…. around one of Europe’s most accessible landscapes

Watch the great eagles soar high above the massive nature park - Glenveagh is home to Ireland's only wild eagles. This unique phenomenon is not the only rare sight you will see in this spectacular setting, however... the Park also plays host to the largest population of red deer in Europe. Situated around beautiful Lough Veagh, it extends to 16,540 hectares of mountains, lakes, glens and woods. Around every corner is a wonder of nature.

Feel a real sense of wellbeing as you make the invigorating climb to the top of imposing mountain ranges, with names that evoke a rich history and colourful past such as Knocknarea, Benbulben, Mount Errigal and the Sperrins.
Pick your saddle!

For those who wish to leave the car behind, Belfast International Airport is situated beside one of Sustrans Cycle Trails – and it leads all the way to the West Coast at Ballyshannon.

For some less can be more when it comes to cycling. The Kingfisher Trail in Fermanagh and Leitrim has loops that lend themselves to daily excursions rather than point to point.

Or saddled up on world famous Irish Horses the riding landscape will vary from long empty beaches to moors, forest trails, mountain paths and lake shores.

This is a Golfing Paradise for every level of golfer - a part of Ireland where families, beginners and visitors will all find a course that challenges or forgives.
