Vienna

Vienna is famous for the Prater, its baroque and Jugendstil architecture, beautiful parks, opera, Sachertorte, wine, and beer. The Innere Stadt traces its history back to Roman times when it was a Roman camp. The area has remained the very centre of this city ever since, and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. The little alleys and back streets are timeless and it is easy to imagine bumping into Mozart or Beethoven in the dusky light of early evening. Right in the heart of the Innere Stadt is the Stephansplatz, dominated by the magnificent gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom). Dating back to the12th century, this cathedral has seen centuries of changes and additions. The North tower houses Austria’s biggest bell (called Pummerin), and also an observation platform that can be reached by lift – here you’ll get the best views over Vienna! In the shadow of the cathedral lies the Mozarthaus, Vienna’s only remaining apartment that Mozart lived in (he lived at a dozen different addresses in the city). The house gives an excellent impression of Mozart’s life in Vienna.

Branching out from the Stephansplatz are Vienna’s three main pedestrianised shopping streets: Kärntner Strasse, Grabe and Kohlmarkt. Whether you’re after big high street names, exclusive designer boutiques, local craft or delicacies – you’ll find it here!

When in Vienna, you must visit the Prater. Going back to the early 15th century when it was the Emperor’s hunting grounds, this modern adventure world has more than 250 attractions: adrenaline boosting rides such as hair raising rollercoasters, go karting rinks, Ejection Seat, and Space shot. For the more sedate visitor there is the a giant Ferris wheel (you could get married here), merry-go-rounds, nostalgic ghost rides, and the “Liliputbahn” (miniature railway). And once you’re tired and weary from all the excitement there are more than 60 restaurants, bars, and eateries where you can relax – from a simple snack and a beer to top cuisine; it’s all at the Prater.

In the evening you can stroll through the so-called Grätzel (district quarters) and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the Bermuda Triangle, where cafes and bars are plenty. The area around Bäckerstrasse and Sonnenfelsgasse is quieter for a more sophisticated eating experience. The Museum Quarter is a very popular place to go out with its heady mix of art and restaurants. Under the railway arches of the Stadtbahn you’ll find a range of trendy bars designed to lift your spirit.
