Prague

With ancient churches, mysterious courtyards, dark passages and cobbled lanes, Prague, the 'city of 100 spires' is a unique architectural melange, dominated by Europe's oldest castle. Modern restaurants and hip bars continue to move in, but the smoky beer halls, serving hearty bread dumplings and slabs of roast pork (not to mention probably the best lagers in the world), are as packed as ever. Progress is unstoppable, but the Bohemian capital remains timeless.

Top of the "must see" list is Prague Castle. (2437 3368). You'll need more than a day to explore the magnificent architecture of the castle and grounds. Open daily 9am-4pm.

Admire the statues on the Charles Bridge, Prague 1. Browse the various stalls selling paintings, photographs, jewellery and hand-painted goods to the various sounds of buskers.

And catch the famous 15th century astronomical clock striking on the hour with its 12 apostles' parade.
