Munich

Go native in Munich, Bavaria's capital city, and sit back in one of the city's myriad beer gardens and sink a few pints of its golden brew. For the more active, take a leisurely stroll through the Englischer Garten, ramble in the Alps or sunbathe by the River Isar. And if this isn't enough for you, there's tennis, rowing and free rock concerts by the lake in the Olympiapark. All of these delights play a part in making Munich the city where most Germans actually want to live.

Don't miss the Schloss Nymphenburg, Nymphenburg (89 179080). Built in 1664, this extraordinary rococo palace now features galleries, tapestries and a porcelain factory, Tues-Sun 9-12.30 and 1.30-5pm. Or the Residenz, Max-Joseph-Platz (89 290671), a Bavarian palace, housing local rulers from 1385 until 1918 and Europe's finest rococo theatre, Mon-Sat 2-5pm.

Museums include the Alpine Museum, Praterinsel 5 (89 211 2240) where you can find out everything you ever wanted to know about mountains without actually having to climb one; 1-6pm Tues-Sat. Or the BMW Museum, Petuelring 130 (89 3833 3307). This car company's historic collection should get speed freaks and engine bores going, 9am-5pm daily.

Or if you're feeling energetic, check out Olympic Spirit, Olympiapark (89 3063 8626), a state-of-the-art sporting theme park in the former Olympic velodrome, 10am-6pm every day.
