Lyon

Regarded as the gateway to the snowy French Alps, Lyon is ideal for sampling the bright lights and party nights of Alpine après-ski.

Lyon at night

The city's cobbled streets and modern malls watch over a treasure trove of architectural delights: from Roman to Renaissance, Gothic to Baroque. Catch the views from the 19th century basilica atop Fourvière, the Hill of Prayer, or from a cable car amid the Alps and view the two rivers - the Rhône and Saône - snake through the city.

Other places of interest include the Gestapo headquarters, and the Centre d'Histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation, 14 ave Berthelot (04 7872 2311) where you can learn about Lyon's French resistance during the occupation.
