In the 16th and 17th centuries, Geneva was a place of refuge for Protestants persecuted in their own countries. In 1863 it became the birthplace of the Red Cross and is now considered the 'City of Peace' for housing such humanitarian institutions.
The Jet d'eau Fountain is the symbol of Geneva and decorates the bank of the lake with its white plume of water. Most shops are around the chic 'Rue du Rhone' and in the 'rues de la Confederation', du Marche and de la Croix d'or. Antique shops abound in the Old Town as well as plenty of typical bistros and galleries.
The popular Saint-Gervais and Paquis areas are worth visiting as well as the colourful fleamarket held at the Plaine de Plainpalais on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Whether you're on a long or a short break, Geneva is home to 30 museums, from the Museum of Art and History, the Natural History Museum, the Botanical Conservatory and Garden, and the International Museum of the Red Cross, so there's something for everyone.
