Cheap flights to Faro
Faro is the gateway to the Algarve, a wonderfully sunny area of Portugal welcoming thousands of tourists every year. With year-round sunshine, miles of beautiful sandy beaches and flower-decked, whitewashed villages it’s not difficult to see why Faro is such a popular holiday destination.
Head to towns like Albufeira and Lagos to explore historic Portugese streets and stop a while in one of the region’s many restaurants to sample the mouth-watering local cuisine; Faro is not a place to head to if you’re on a strict diet. Venture along the beach-lined Atlantic coast to find resorts to suit every need, from the activity-filled child-friendly Lagos, Albufeira and Praia da Rocha to the luxurious marina at Vilamoura, and the historic towns of Silves, Tavira or Sagres.

(Avenida 5 de Outubro) You'll find the Algarve's best fish market a short hop from Faro in Olhão. It's a riot of colour and noise. Come on a Saturday and the area around the daily market includes additional stalls selling a medley of clothes, crafts and local produce.

The annual Querença Smoked Sausage Festival on 27 January celebrates the patron saint of animals, Saint LuÃs, with plenty of live music, stalls and a religious procession, all fuelled by a range of particularly fine smoked sausages.

Around 11km north of Faro lies the important Roman site of Milreu. Excavations are ongoing, but you can look around several buildings, some displaying beautiful fish mosaics (igespar.ip).

For the energetic, the recently opened Rota Vicentina is a fantastic marked walking trail that skirts the western edge of the Algarve, ending at Sagres. The whole route is over 340km, but each stage is less than 25km. www.rotavicentina.com
