For live music and jazz, there's nothing quite like the Festival Alguer, which runs throughout the warmer months in the amphitheatre and town fort. There are also theatre productions and musicals and all of Alghero descends.

As the days get milder, life moves outdoors in Alghero's medieval old town, or centro storico, where its Catalan heritage is felt keenly in a maze of tangled alleys. Piazza Civica is a prime spot for watching the world go by from a cafe terrace. Or grab a gelato and head down to the honey-coloured sea walls.
