This seaside city with its Swabian Castle looking on has its own surprises in store. Quaint and surprisingly chic, Bari boasts increasingly upmarket bars and restaurants and is home to the bones of St Nicholas, also known as Santa Claus. This central avenue forms the hub of several blocks of shopping paradise with lots of smaller boutique shops running off the side streets and beyond. A must-visit location for those with a shopping scratch to itch.

For centuries in Foggia they have been celebrating the feast of Saint George with an ox-and-cart race between the five neighbourhoods of the city. For five months the ox teams train and prepare for this important celebration and the town erupts into a frenzied celebration on 23 April.
