Chania, also known as Khania, facing the Aegean Sea on the north western coast of Crete is a stunning location for the perfect sun-soaked holiday. With 415km of coastline in the surrounding Chania region alone, there is no shortage of pristine beaches and plenty of opportunities for a wide range of exciting water sports. Visitors can try their hand at scuba diving, sea kayaking and cruising, or head inland for scenic rock-climbing and hiking.
Chania also hides some beautiful archaeological sights from the island’s ancient Greek heritage, these include the ancient harbour-side Fort Firkas. The town boasts a fascinating naval museum and if you’re looking to pick up a souvenir head to the church of San Salvatore of the Francheskan Monks, which plays host to small stalls offering locally crafted handiwork. Try traditional Cretan food at the Municipal Market, including home-made cheeses and wines. 28 October is a national holiday for Ohi Day, marking the anniversary of the day in 1940 when Greece's General Metaxas said "No" ("Ohi") to Mussolini's Italian troops entering Greek territory. Watch the military and student parades through Chania town at midday.

Take a hike down the famous 16km-long Samaria gorge in south-west Crete, where you'll be treated to some amazing scenery, flora and fauna. The gorge is closed in winter and partly opens from the bottom end in April, fully opening at the beginning of May.
