Carnival climaxes on Sunday 17 March, with an afternoon procession of floats, bands and majorettes in Corfu Town. It's not Rio, but it is regarded as one of the best in Greece, and draws big crowds. Celebrations continue on Monday, with similar processions and live Greek music in villages all over the island (17-18 March).

October 2012
Corfu's renowned philharmonic bands march into action on the Ochi Day ("No" Day) procession, commemorating Greece's refusal in 1940 to submit to Mussolini. Watch from anywhere at the upper end of the esplanade. The procession starts at 11am on 28 October.

Bordering the Contra Fossa moat of Corfu Town's old fortress, the Bosketto Garden is a haven from the traffic of neighbouring Esplanade Square and the bustle of the Liston bars. See the busts of renowned authors Lawrence and Gerald Durrell. Afterwards, take time to visit the fortress with its museums and fine views.
