Kunstkammer (5 Burgring, tel: 01 525 240) The new star of Vienna's colossal Kunsthistorisches Museum is this chamber of arts, which reopened after almost a decade in March 2013. Alongside oddities such as ostrich egg trophies, you'll find Benvenuto Cellini's 16th-century Saliera, an exquisite salt cellar hand-crafted from rolled gold.
January 2013
Glittering evening balls take over the city every winter, but there's no grander night than the Vienna Opera Ball, which attracts the country's social elite. Ball gowns and tuxedos are required attire, but the event is open to anyone quick enough to grab a ticket (7 February, wiener-staatsoper.at).

Vienna's Tiergarten is surely one of the most distinctive zoos in the world, built all the way back in the 18th century for the imperial family. Chock full of baroque details, this is a delight for those with a taste for the bizarre.

Those of a romantic disposition might enjoy wandering the avenues of the vast Zentralfriedhof cemetery. The tombs - many of them works of art in their own right - are practically a roll call of the city's greats, with Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Schoenberg and several members of the Strauss family. Don't miss the glorious - and good value - Schloss Concordia restaurant opposite the main entrance.
