Verona

Verona
If you’re looking for a long or short break to Verona, then book a cheap flight with easyJet. Situated in the Veneto region of north-east Italy, Verona is an ancient beautiful Italian city. Boasting huge amounts of ancient architecture to visit, and an infamous love story to marvel in, Verona is truly a place to experience with loved ones.

Verona is famous for the Romeo and Juliet Shakespearean love story. Although the characters are purely fictional, they remain a legend in Verona and many tourist flock to the city to visit Juliet’s iconic balcony. Her house was built in the 12th Century although the ‘balcony’ was a later addition in around 1920. Visit her house and have your photograph taken on the famous balcony for a cost of €4 for adults or €3 for children.

Once you have completed your mythical tour of Verona, why not visit some of the truly spectacular architecture of the city. The Basillica di San Zeno Maggiore has a large rose window widely known as the ‘wheel of fortune’, enormous bronze doors and a 72 meter tall bell tower offering impressive views of the city.

The church of St. Anastasia is gothic in style and is adorned with many works of art. The huge and lofty building is the largest church in Verona, and although the exterior in poor condition it has retained its impressive wooden doors. From Churches to Castles, next on your list of must sees should be the Castelvecchio. Sitting on the shore of the Adige River, the 14th Century building houses the city art museum of medieval sculptures and paintings.

At the heart of Verona you will find the Piazza delle Erbe with its picturesque vegetable market. The square is dominated by the high Lamberti Tower, the tallest tower in Verona with 238 steps to the summit. The breathtaking view from the top is definitely worth the climb!

The Roman Amphitheatre Arena is the one of the biggest in Italy behind the Colosseum in Rome. The exterior has almost completely ruined yet the interior remains impressive and almost completely intact. The arena still functions today so why not book to see a performance at this ancient theatre whilst in Verona.

Dine like the locals and choose an eatery along the small lanes of the centro storico (the old centre). Typical Veronese dishes include Gnocchi (small potato dumpling), Tortellini, Bigoli (long thick spaghetti like pasta), Pastissada de Caval (braised horsemeat), and Polenta (a staple to all Veronese cooking).

Whilst in Verona why not visit some of the surrounding countryside. Lake Garda is a popular day-trip destination and is only 20 minutes on the train. Get off at Desenzano del Garda and explore the beautiful lake. Or head in the other direction to Venice for a spectacular trip to the city built on water.
