Holy Week, or ‘Semana Santa’ as it’s known in Spanish, is an important traditional religious festival in the city that runs the week leading up to Easter. The impressive processions draw crowds of both residents and visitors so be sure not to miss the magical atmosphere if you are in the city around Easter.
Another spectacular festival in Seville is the ‘Feria de Abril’. The weeklong party is approximately two weeks after Holy Week and attracts enormous crowds to the city. Parades adorn the streets during the day, whilst at night brightly striped tents house food and drink, as well as music and dancing by women in traditional flamenco dress.
Seville has a Mediterranean climate which means that winters are generally mild and summers are blazing hot! Visit the Museum of Fine Art during the day to take respite from the sun and see famous masterpieces by Murillo, Velázquez and Martínez. And on a sunny day be sure to visit the Giralda tower at the heart of the Cathedral for a magnificent view of the City.
During the evening head to a bar for a taste of tapas. Small dishes of food from the surrounding provinces create the perfect evening social activity. Fried and grilled seafood, meats in sauces, Andalucían ham, vegetables, lentils, cheeses and salads are all types of Tapas dishes you can order. If you want to mix with the locals then don’t head out until about 11:30pm!
