It's a compact city, much of which you can cover on foot, especially the shopping district. The district is what you'd expect in a chic Swiss city: boutiques carrying fur, antiques and chocolates.
The city is home to 30 museums and over 100 art galleries. The Kunsthaus houses pieces from Rodin, Matisse and a large collection of Munch. The Swiss National Museum is also intriguing, offering a detailed look at the history and culture of the country.
Zurich also has a history of being the home to many eminent personalities: Irish novelist James Joyce wrote here and is buried in Flutern Cemetery. Carl Jung developed modern psychoanalysis in the city.
It is, of course, impossible to talk about Switzerland without mentioning skiing in some way or other. However, although the country's magnificent wintry Alps draw thousands of tourists each year, Zurichers are not too keen on the sport's presence and are known to celebrate the end of the season each year: a spring festival culminates with the igniting of a cotton snowman stuffed with fireworks, sending winter off with a bang. The Alps are equally dramatic during the summer months and remain a popular holiday destination throughout the year.
