Gornji grad (upper town) and Donji grad (lower town) are the popular hubs of the city, where the main cultural, religious and tourist hotspots can be found. You can enjoy many pleasant walks through the picturesque open air markets, and green parks. Stop and watch the street performers or buy hand crafted jewellery from the street sellers.
The capital offers a wide variety of cultural institutions including the Koncertna Dvorana Vatroslav Lisinski (Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall), which is home to the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra. They stage classical music performances as well as the occasional jazz concert. The Hrvatsko Narodno Kazaliste (HNK, Croatian National Theatre) show performances of stage dramas, operas and ballets.
If you fancy a shopping trip while you are in Zagreb then take a trip to Dolac, a market on the north side of Trg Bana Jelačića. It is open Monday to Friday 0700 to 1600 (Saturday and Sunday 0700 to 1200). It offers colourful stalls selling fruit, vegetables and flowers. For souvenirs and gifts to take home with you, check out the craft stalls.
