Visiting Porto means that you must enjoy the visual and gastronomic delights of this stunning city. On arrival, climb the 225 steps of the Torre dos Clérigos, an 18th Century tower in the centre of historical old Porto, to get a birds eye view and your bearings.
The city’s cathedral, Sé do Oporto, completed in the 13th Century is one of Porto’s oldest attractions and one of the most important Romanesque monuments in the country. From the Sé, take your time to explore the narrow, cobbled streets that have hardly changed in 300 years and tumble down to the Ribiero (Old Town), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Ribiero waterfront is the best place to view the two-level Luis I bridge which dominates the city skyline and connects the main town to suburb of Vila Nova de Gaia, where the famous port lodges can be found. The names of Cockburn, Sandeman and others have been attracting merchants, bon vivants and now tourists, in their droves. A guided tour is not to be missed!
The pedestrianised mosaic walkways of Santa Caterina house the main shopping areas and once you’ve shopped, you can drop into one of the many cafes where you’ll be guaranteed a great coffee; take it with a Nata (Portuguese custard tart) to relax like a local. Our favourite is the Majestic Café on Rua de Santa Catarina, where the refreshments are as invigorating as the 1920s neo-baroque interior.
There is plenty to see and do in Porto – far too much for just one weekend! Football fans are well catered for with two top teams – FC Boavista and FC Porto, European Champions in 2004. There are some delightful parks in which you can while away a lazy afternoon. The Palácio de Cristal has stunning river views whilst the art deco gardens of the Fundação Serralves are home to the Museu de Arte Comtemporânea.
There are many other museums, galleries and theatres to choose from including the magnificent Palácio da Bolsa (Stock Exchange Palace) and the stunning concert hall - Casa de Musica. Opened in 2005, the Casa de Musica, instantly became an icon for the city with its geometric design drawing comparisons with the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
Getting around the city is quick and easy thanks to a new metro system and good bus and tram links. Take the 20 minute tram ride to Foz where you can walk along the seafront and watch the sun set over the Atlantic from one of the many beach level cafés.
And if you take a flight to Porto, it makes a great base from where to explore the stunning Douro Valley.
