Luxor

Luxor
If you’re looking for a long or short break to Luxor, then book a cheap flight with easyJet. With a flight time of only five hours you now have no excuse not to visit!

Originally the great capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom, Luxor is now a modern thriving city. Located on the River Nile in Upper (southern) Egypt, you can expect to find a wealth of culture in which to immerse yourself. Built on the site of the Ancient City of Thebes, the city has often been described as the ‘world’s greatest open air museum’.

Several of Egypts archaeological sites can be found in Luxor and all are worth a visit. The Avenue of the Sphinx is the remains of the historic walkway that once connected the temples of Luxor and Karnak. Stretching about 3 kilometres the striking site provides the perfect photo opportunity. Or why not visit the Colossi of Memnon – two giant sandstone statues which stand at 23 metres high.

For souvenir shopping head to Sharia al-Karnak (meaning Karnak Temple Street). Colourful signs indicate the bazaars which offer typical Egyptian artefacts. Look out for scarves, spices, local clay pots and Alabaster – make sure you barter to get the best price for your goods!

Why not try the local cuisine - the popular dish of kushari is made from rice, lentils and chickpeas topped with garlic and a spicy tomato salsa, or if vegetarian isn’t your thing go for a kebab or kofta (grilled spiced meat).

If you are a sun worshipper then Luxor is definitely for you. The weather is hot and dry in the summer with cooler sunny days in the winter. Temperatures can easily reach above 40 degrees Celsius during summer months, and is dry for most of the year with very little rain. Don’t be surprised if you experience hot winds during the spring. Known to the Egyptians as ‘Khamsin’, this gusty weather during March and April can bring sand from the parched westerly desert areas.
