Home to many Michelin star restaurants, it now has an international reputation for producing innovative cuisine, using local produce, mainly north Atlantic fish and shellfish.
Gothenburg is a shopper’s paradise with most of its department stores within walking distance of each other.
One of the most popular attractions in Gothenburg is Liseberg, Northern Europe’s largest amusement park. It is home to over 35 rides, ranging from the slow and gentle to the fast and furious! Throughout summer it attracts people who aren’t necessarily interested in the rides, as the park also offers many shows and performances, not to mention a variety of restaurants and cafés. It’s a lovely place to relax during the summer months.
The park closes for a brief period in October but comes to life again for the festive period, and becomes the place to be to experience a traditional Scandinavian Christmas. The park is covered in a blanket of twinkling lights, there is a traditional Christmas market, Christmas music and even an ice bar.
Another very popular excursion whilst visiting Gothenburg is a boat trip to Älvsborg Fästning fortress which was built in the 17th century for protection from the Danes. Daily dramatised tours take place which guide you through the fortress and around the island.
