The Rock of Gibraltar is am imposing, impressive feature at the exit and entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. It towers over the surrounding countryside and signals the point where Africa and Europe are closest. The lime stone Rock has been home to people for centuries, evidence of which can be found in the many caves (over 140 so far!) that can found there. The lime contained within the Rock has been mined for centuries and one late 19th century lime kiln remains as a testament to its uses: to whitewash buildings, to paint water cisterns so that the water was free of bacteria and perhaps most importantly in times of plague, to pour over dead bodies in mass graves to prevent further spread of disease.

Barbary apes are one of Gibraltar’s most famous tourist attractions. There are about 160 Macaques living in Gibraltar in two main areas. About 20 of them at Apes' Den can be observed closely and the largest pack lives in the Great Siege area. This network of tunnels underneath the Rock was created for the Great Siege of 1783 to be able to get guns onto a projection from the sheer north face of the Rock. One tunnel was dug and it was clear how useful this tactic was and more tunnels followed. Later, after the Siege, chambers were excavated to store guns and ammunition in a safe place. During the World War II the Royal Engineers added an additional 30km of tunnels to the existing network. The Great Siege Tunnels now host exhibitions of life in the tunnels throughout their history.

The best views around are to be had at the Top Station of Gibraltar and can be reached via the cable car. From here Africa can be seen across the Straits of Gibraltar to the south; to the west is the City of Gibraltar and a wonderful view across the bay to Algeciras; to the north lies the vast expanse of Spain and a great view of Gibraltar Airport; and to the east lies the Mediterranean Sea with its long beaches and the cities of the Costa del Sol.
