The old town centre is located within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace – a UNESCO heritage site - and is a warren of little cobbled streets oozing with charm and history. All of Split’s impressive history can be traced here, from Roman streets and palace gates, to medieval chapels and churches. Today the streets are lined with little boutiques, galleries, souvenir shops, and restaurants. Big shopping malls with ll the big high street names can be found on the outskirts of the city. Split has outgrown the palace walls long since and has expanded in step with its economical and tourist industry-related growth.
Being a port-city, Split offers exceedingly good sea food restaurants, but be sure to also try some of the local specialities such as pršut (wind-dried and smoked ham), pašticada s njokima (Dalmatian stewed beef served with noodles), or salted sardines, all washed down with a good local wine.
A little further afield you will find the town of Trogir, famous for its two thousand year history. Just north of Split is the river Cetina where you can enjoy white water rafting and canoeing, all overlooked by the magnificent medieval fortress of Klis, built to defend the region against Turkish invasion.
