County Clare is one of Ireland's most popular tourist destinations, because of its variety. The county has stunning scenery along the Atlantic coast, such as the cliffs of Moher. Not only are these cliffs wild and beautiful, they are also one of Ireland's most important bird watching sites; they are home to more than 20 nesting species, and over 30,000 breeding pairs of seabirds.
Further inland the landscape has lakes scattered everywhere, with Lough Derg being the largest one. This lake is also known as Pleasure Lake. Bordering on three counties (Clare, Galway, and North Tipperary) it offers great days out for leisure visitors and the more active traveller. Water sports, hiking, and cycling are all popular activities here. The lake itself gives access to more than 200 kms of inland waterways, and is navigable along its total 40 kms length.
Craggaunowen Prehistoric Park is another fabulous day out. It gives an impression of life in Ireland approximately 1,000 years ago, with the help of reconstructed dwellings, roads, ships, tombs, and even rare animal breeds. The Park is located near Quin, just off the R469 from Ennis.
The pretty village of Kilfenora has an impressive history. In the 12th century it became a diocese, and its church later became a cathedral. Kilfenora is known for the high crosses in the graveyard in the cathedral grounds; the town became known as 'The city of the crosses'. Only a few crosses remain today, but the site is still worth a visit. The Burren Centre in Kilfenora is an experience many visitors find unforgettable. Here the beauty of the Burren area is shown through exhibitions, films, walks, and craft shops.
