Marrakech

Marrakech is Morocco’s second largest city, and the centre for culture, entertainment and pleasure. This former capital is a lively place famous for its markets and festivals. Djemaa el-Fna Square is where it all happens; here tribesmen come to trade their wares and Berber trades people bring their goods – here you will find acrobats, entertainers, storytellers, and comedians. Many food stalls display their wares, and many restaurants are dotted throughout the narrow little streets surrounding the square.

There aren’t many historical monuments in Marrakech, and the two that stand out are Saadian Tombs with their fine carvings and the Koutoubia Minaret, one of the most impressive Islamic monuments in North Africa.
The Saadian Tombs were built by Sultan Ahmed el Mansour in the late 16th century as a necropolis for himself and his successors. 66 indoor tombs have been extensively carved in cedar wood panelling and grey Italian marble.

The Koutoubia Minaret is the tallest building in Marrakech (as tall as the Notre Dame in Paris) and is the first major impression visitors will get when approaching the city. The tower is different from each side with different colours, and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Here you will find the remains of a mosque that was destroyed because it wasn’t perfectly aligned with Mecca.

Marrakech has some beautiful places: the Agdal and Menara Gardens are great peaceful spaces with picnic spots, big lake-size pools, and cool shady areas. If you fancy some hustle and bustle you must visit one of the souks: these interesting areas in the town dedicate themselves to a specific art or craft, and you can see the work in progress and experience how lively Marrakech can be!
