Cyprus (Pahpos)

The charming harbour town of Paphos which was Cyprus’ capital under Alexander the Great is to be found in Aphrodite’s birth canal, on the west coast of the island. History, myths and magic characterise Paphos, which was named after Aphrodite’s daughter. The town is near the stone Petra tou Romiou where Aphrodite is said to have emerged in the sea foam. Those who swim around the stone ten times are supposed to look ten years younger. But make sure you go in the right direction –
otherwise the transformation will have the opposite effect. The kings’ graves, mosaics and Paphos Castle are just some of all the fantastic monuments and museums which adorn the town. For this reason, Paphos is included in UNESCO’s official list of the world’s cultural and natural treasures.

Cyprus further afield
It is easy to understand the legend about Greece’s goddess of love, Aphrodite, who was born from the waves on Cyprus´ beaches. The mythology, language, traditions and life-style are Greek, but dolmades and sheep’s cheese salad compete alongside Cypriot delicacies such as mezé and halloumi cheese. Enjoy a vibrant mix of east and west and take the entertainment pulse of the island of passion!

With its 300 days of sunshine a year Cyprus is a hot tourist destination and the island’s history is equally hot. Cyprus got its name 3500 years ago when valuable copper – kypros – was found which attracted hordes of Greeks and made the island into a symbol of power. Ten different peoples have ruled the island over 27 centuries. Few countries live their history with such passion. Local hospitality impresses most visitors.

From the golden beaches giving plenty of opportunity for spectacular water sports, through citrus trees, pines and the Troodos mountains, to the delightful area around Kyrenia, Cyprus is a colourful adventure. See Nicosia, the city divided by a wall, discover the food and culture and participate in the pulsating nightlife. The impressive Troodos mountains are supposed to have emerged from the sea approximately 92 million years ago, just like Aphrodite. See the dizzy views from the almost 2000-metre high mountain of Olympos and enjoy the fragrant pine trees. Byzantine churches full of icons, frescoes and art can be found in Troodos. In winter the area turns into a thriving ski resort.
