Asturias

Oviedo airport is located in the Asturias region of northern Spain, famous for its beautiful countryside. The area offers a varied choice with more than 200 gorgeous beaches along the 345 km coastline, and impressive mountains - all within 30 kms distance of each other. Approximately one-third of Asturias has been recognised for its outstanding beauty, and has been given special status as Protected Natural Space. UNESCO has named four specific nature reserves as dedicated Reserves of the Biosphere.

Asturias is one of the oldest kingdoms on the Iberian peninsula with an age-old culture, traces of which can be found in every town and village. The region is very protective of its heritage, and pioneers rural tourism to a European audience. In spite of growing numbers of visitors to the region, the traditionally rural essence remains, which can be seen in the maintenance of traditional Asturias architecture.

Some of the largest cities of the country can be found here, all within 20 kms of each other: Avilés, Oviedo, and Gijón. These vibrant, modern cities are an excellent place to start a holiday in Asturias, because they are firmly rooted in tradition and very protective of their past and historical sites.

Asturias’ lush countryside with green and fertile fields, clear rivers, and wild mountians is an excellent provider of some fantastic delicacies. Fresh fish and seafood, meat, fruit, vegetables, and cheese – all of the highest quality. This fresh produce is the basis for the region’s wonderful cuisine. And of course, you must sample the most famous of all Asturias’ products, the local cider, claimed to be the best in the world!
